Sadio Mané’s late strike sends Senegal past Egypt in tense semi-final clash
Senegal Continue Dominance Over Egypt
Senegal extended their strong Africa Cup of Nations rivalry with Egypt after securing a 1–0 victory on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, to book a place in the AFCON 2025 final.
Just like the 2021 AFCON final, it was Senegal who celebrated at the end of the night. The win also marked their 11th victory in their last 12 matches against North African teams.
Cagey First Half With Few Chances
The first half was intense but lacked clear chances. Egypt failed to register a single shot, while Senegal controlled possession without creating much danger.
Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy dealt comfortably with efforts from Habib Diarra and Pape Gueye, while Nicolas Jackson missed a good chance by firing over the bar.
Senegal suffered a blow when captain Kalidou Koulibaly was forced off injured. Both Koulibaly and Diarra were booked, ruling them out of the final.

Mané Delivers the Decisive Moment
After the break, Senegal continued to push but struggled to break Egypt’s solid defence. Long-range shots became their main threat, with Lamine Camara testing El Shenawy from distance.
The breakthrough finally came in the 78th minute when Sadio Mané reacted quickest to a loose ball and fired a brilliant shot from the edge of the box.
The goal marked Mané’s fifth goal involvement of the tournament and took his AFCON tally to 11 goals, drawing him level with Mohamed Salah.
Senegal March Into Another Final
Egypt offered little response and managed just one shot on target throughout the match. Senegal controlled the closing stages to reach their third AFCON final in five tournaments.
The defeat denied Egypt what would have been their 10th AFCON final appearance, while Senegal move one step closer to lifting the trophy once again.
