Xabi Alonso Departs Real Madrid
Real Madrid have officially announced the departure of head coach Xabi Alonso after just seven months in charge of the club.
The decision was confirmed one day after Real Madrid’s 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final played in Saudi Arabia.
Club Confirms Mutual Agreement
In a statement, Real Madrid said the club and Alonso had decided to part ways by mutual consent.
“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend,” the club stated, adding that Real Madrid will always be his home.
League and Champions League Situation
At the time of his departure, Real Madrid were second in the La Liga table, four points behind leaders Barcelona at the halfway stage of the season.

In the Champions League, Los Blancos sit seventh, having won four of their six matches so far.

Challenges During Alonso’s Spell
Alonso, who replaced Carlo Ancelotti in June 2025 after the Italian took charge of the Brazilian national team, showed early promise but faced increasing challenges.
Injuries, inconsistent results, and reported dressing room tensions affected his final months in charge.
Despite a recent Spanish Super Cup semi-final win over Atletico Madrid, the final loss to Barcelona is believed to have pushed club president Florentino Pérez and the board into action.
Álvaro Arbeloa appointed as new head coach
Following the announcement, Real Madrid officially named Álvaro Arbeloa as the new head coach of the first team.
A former standout for the club, Arbeloa had been in charge of Real Madrid Castilla since June 2025. He has spent his entire coaching career within Real Madrid’s academy, which he joined in 2020.
