Racism Allegation Overshadows Real Madrid Win Against Benfica in Lisbon

Champions League clash paused as referee activates FIFA anti-racism protocol.

Vinicius Junior racism allegations overshadowed Real Madrid’s Champions League clash with Benfica, after the match was halted following an alleged racist slur directed at the Brazilian forward.

The incident occurred five minutes into the second half at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, shortly after Vinicius scored the only goal of the first-leg knockout playoff encounter.

Match Temporarily Halted

Broadcast footage showed the 25-year-old forward reporting the incident to French referee François Letexier, prompting the official to activate FIFA’s anti-racism protocol by crossing his arms and suspending play.

The stoppage lasted approximately 11 minutes as Vinicius left the pitch momentarily while discussions took place between match officials and players.

Players React to Incident

Speaking after the match, England international Trent Alexander-Arnold condemned the alleged abuse.

“What’s happened tonight is a disgrace to football. It’s overshadowed the performance, especially after such an amazing goal. There’s no place for it in football or society. It’s disgusting.”

Possible Sanctions

According to reports, disciplinary action could follow if the alleged offender is found guilty.

Sports correspondent Rob Harris explained that the accused player could face a ban, noting that football authorities often impose sanctions in an effort to combat racism in the game.

Real Madrid currently hold a 1–0 advantage heading into the second leg in Madrid.

Celebration Sparked Tensions

Tensions escalated after Vinicius celebrated his goal by dancing near the corner flag, leading to confrontations with Benfica players. The Brazilian was later shown a yellow card for the celebration, a decision he questioned after the match.

Real Madrid players were reportedly prepared to leave the pitch before the referee allowed play to resume.

Vinicius Speaks Out

In a post-match Instagram message, Vinicius said the incident was not new to him or his family.

“Racists are cowards. They hide because they are weak,” he wrote, adding that the protocol applied during the match “serves no purpose” if punishment does not follow.

He also expressed frustration at being booked, stating that moments like these should not overshadow team achievements.
