Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has declared Monday, January 19, 2026, a paid public holiday to celebrate the country’s victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The announcement follows Senegal’s dramatic 1–0 win over host nation Morocco in the final played on Sunday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
Speaking shortly after the final, President Faye said the decision was taken to allow all Senegalese citizens to take part in the nationwide celebrations.
“This Monday will be considered a paid public holiday. Senegalese people will celebrate. Then we must welcome the Lions properly and congratulate them,” he said.
How Senegal Won the AFCON 2025 Final
The highly charged final was decided in extra time after a tense and controversial encounter.
Morocco were awarded a late penalty following a VAR review, but goalkeeper Édouard Mendy produced a crucial save to deny Brahim Díaz, keeping Senegal alive in the match.
Moments later, Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal in the fourth minute of extra time, sealing victory and sparking celebrations among Senegalese fans worldwide.
Controversy and Chaos in Rabat
The match was briefly halted after Senegal players walked off the pitch in protest against the penalty decision, following instructions from head coach Pape Thiaw.
Security officials intervened to restore order before play resumed. After the final whistle, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation announced plans to pursue legal action with CAF and FIFA, accusing Senegal of misconduct.
CAF has confirmed that it is reviewing footage of the incident and disciplinary measures could follow.
Second AFCON Title for Senegal
The victory marks Senegal’s second AFCON title, following their first triumph in Cameroon 2021.
President Faye also promised special rewards for the players in recognition of their achievement, as preparations begin to welcome the team home in Dakar.
