Why Boxing Day Is Celebrated After Christmas

What Is Boxing Day?
After Christmas Day, the celebrations do not stop. The next day, Boxing Day, is marked on December 26 and is a public holiday in several countries.
Many families use the day to relax, spend time together, and enjoy the festive season a little longer.
When Did Boxing Day Start?
Boxing Day has been officially celebrated since 1871. It became a bank holiday in the UK in 1974.
Despite the name, Boxing Day has nothing to do with the sport of boxing, though the word “box” does play a role in its origin.
Why Is It Called Boxing Day?
The name Boxing Day comes from an old charity tradition.
During the time of Queen Victoria, churches collected money in boxes to help the poor. These charity boxes were opened and shared with the less fortunate after Christmas.

Gifts for Servants and Workers
In the past, servants were given December 26 off, which was rare at the time.
Their employers would give them gifts called “Christmas boxes” to thank them for their service. Over time, this practice helped give the day its name — Boxing Day.
Even today, some people continue the tradition by giving tips or gifts to postmen and service workers.
