Burkina Faso Says It Foiled Assassination Plot Against Ibrahim Traoré
Government accuses former leader Paul-Henri Damiba of backing failed plot
Government Claims Plot Was Stopped at Last Minute
The Burkina Faso government says it has foiled an alleged assassination plot against the country’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, just hours before it was due to be carried out.
Security Minister Mahamadou Sana made the announcement during a late-night televised address, saying intelligence services intercepted the plan in its final stages.
Former Junta Leader Accused
According to Sana, the plot was allegedly organised by Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba, the former military leader who was removed from power by Traoré in September 2022.
The minister further claimed the operation was funded from Ivory Coast, including about 70 million CFA francs (around $125,000). Neither Damiba nor Ivorian authorities have commented on the allegations.
Alleged Video Shows Attack Plans
Sana said investigators uncovered a leaked video showing suspects discussing how they planned to carry out the attack.

The alleged plan involved either a close-range attack or an explosive attack at Traoré’s residence shortly after 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 3.
Authorities claim the group also planned to attack other senior military and civilian officials after the initial strike.

Arrests Made, Investigations Ongoing
The security minister said several arrests have been made, though he did not disclose the number of suspects detained.
“We are conducting ongoing investigations, and those involved will be brought to justice,” Sana said, urging citizens not to be drawn into “dangerous schemes.”
Traoré Faces Repeated Threats
Since taking power, Captain Traoré, 37, has faced at least two alleged coup attempts while dealing with growing jihadist violence that has displaced millions across the country.
Despite criticism from local and international observers over authoritarian rule and media restrictions, Traoré maintains strong domestic support and has gained attention across Africa for his pan-African stance and criticism of Western influence.
