Why Boxing Day Is Celebrated After Christmas

The history, meaning, and traditions behind the December 26 holiday

What Boxing Day means and why it is celebrated

What Is Boxing Day?

After Christmas Day, the celebrations do not stop. The next day, Boxing Day, is marked on December 26 and is a public holiday in several countries.

Many families use the day to relax, spend time together, and enjoy the festive season a little longer.

When Did Boxing Day Start?

Boxing Day has been officially celebrated since 1871. It became a bank holiday in the UK in 1974.

Despite the name, Boxing Day has nothing to do with the sport of boxing, though the word “box” does play a role in its origin.

Why Is It Called Boxing Day?

The name Boxing Day comes from an old charity tradition.

During the time of Queen Victoria, churches collected money in boxes to help the poor. These charity boxes were opened and shared with the less fortunate after Christmas.

Gifts for Servants and Workers

In the past, servants were given December 26 off, which was rare at the time.

Their employers would give them gifts called “Christmas boxes” to thank them for their service. Over time, this practice helped give the day its name — Boxing Day.

Even today, some people continue the tradition by giving tips or gifts to postmen and service workers.

Boxing Day Around the World

Boxing Day is celebrated in several countries that were once part of the British Empire, including:

Ghana Nigeria Canada Australia New Zealand South Africa Singapore Hong Kong Trinidad and Tobago

In many of these countries, Boxing Day is now known for big sales, similar to Black Friday.

Boxing Day and Sports

By the 18th century, Boxing Day became popular for outdoor sports such as hunting and horse racing.

In the 19th century, it became an important date in football, especially in England.

Today, many fans enjoy watching back-to-back Premier League matches on Boxing Day.

How People Celebrate Today

For some, Boxing Day is about:

Shopping deals Watching football Relaxing at home

For others, it’s simply a day to enjoy leftover Christmas food and spend time with family.
