US Freezes Immigrant Visa Processing for 75 Countries
United States pauses immigrant visa processing for 75 countries over stricter โpublic chargeโ immigration checks.
US Announces Indefinite Visa Freeze
The United States government has announced an indefinite freeze on immigrant visa processing for Ghana and 74 other countries as part of new measures to tighten immigration controls.
According to a US State Department memo, consular officers were instructed to pause immigrant visa processing starting January 21, while a full review of screening and vetting procedures is carried out.
Why the US Is Pausing Visa Processing
The decision is based on the enforcement of the โpublic chargeโ rule, which allows US authorities to deny visas to applicants considered likely to depend on government welfare or public benefits.
Visa officers are now required to assess:
- Health condition
- Age
- Financial strength
- English language ability
- Possible long-term medical needs
Applicants with a history of relying on government assistance may face refusal.

Ghana Among 75 Affected Countries
The policy affects 75 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America.
Countries affected include Ghana, Nigeria, Somalia, Egypt, Brazil, Russia, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Thailand and Yemen, among others.
The State Department says applications may be refused under existing immigration laws during the review period.
US Government Explains the Decision
US State Department spokesperson Tommy Piggott said the move is meant to protect American taxpayers.
โImmigration from these 75 countries will be paused while the State Department reassesses procedures to prevent the entry of foreign nationals who may rely on welfare and public benefits,โ he said.
Exceptions, officials say, will be very limited.
No Timeline for Visa Processing to Resume
The US government has not announced any timeline for when normal visa processing will resume.
The freeze is expected to significantly affect family reunification, work visas and permanent residency plans for thousands of applicants from Ghana and other affected nations.
