Fire Razes Over 50 Phone Shops Behind VVIP Station at Kwame Nkrumah Circle
A massive fire outbreak has destroyed more than 50 mobile phone shops and warehouses located behind the VVIP Station at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.
The incident occurred in the morning hours of Tuesday, January 20, 2026, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky and causing panic in the busy commercial hub.
Fire Breaks Out Around 10 a.m.
Eyewitnesses say the fire started at about 10 a.m. and spread rapidly through the densely packed structures, many of which were used as storage facilities for mobile phones, accessories, and other electronic items.
The blaze also affected nearby kiosks serving as homes and food vending points, forcing traders and occupants to flee as the flames intensified.
Fire Service Responds, Faces Water Challenges
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded swiftly, deploying five fire engines, including a private water tanker, to combat the inferno.

Confirming the incident, Assistant Fire Officer Rashid Kwame Esau said preliminary information suggested the fire started from one of the kiosks in the area.
โWe have five fire engines here including a private tanker. Some have gone to replenish water about two or three times and they are here. We are told it started from a kiosk but as to what caused the fire in the kiosk we are yet to investigate further,โ he said.
Firefighters battled the flames for several hours, with intermittent water shortages forcing some tenders to leave the scene temporarily to refill before returning.
Significant Losses, No Casualties Reported
Although no injuries or fatalities have been officially reported, the fire caused extensive damage to property. Many affected traders were seen salvaging what they could from the debris, while others lamented the loss of goods stocked for wholesale distribution.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Klottey Korle Municipal Assembly later arrived at the scene to assess the damage and coordinate emergency support for victims.
Cause of Fire Under Investigation
While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, some traders suspect an electrical fault may have triggered the outbreak. The Ghana National Fire Service has assured the public that a full investigation will be conducted to establish the cause and prevent future occurrences.
Authorities have also advised residents and motorists to avoid the area as clean-up operations and investigations continue.
