Ghana to Roll Out E-Visa Policy in Early 2026
Diaspora to enjoy reduced visa fees as government plans reciprocal visa charges and revival of Ghana Airways
Ghana Introduces E-Visa Policy in 2026
The Government of Ghana will introduce an Electronic Visa (E-Visa) policy in the first quarter of 2026, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the maiden Diaspora Summit held in Accra on Saturday, December 20, 2025, Mr Ablakwa said the policy is being implemented under the direct instruction of President John Dramani Mahama.
According to him, the new e-visa system will make travel to Ghana faster, easier, and more convenient, especially for people of African descent living abroad.
Special Visa Discount for African Diaspora
Mr Ablakwa revealed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved a special visa fee reduction for Africans in the diaspora.
This arrangement will allow members of the diaspora to pay less for visas compared to other travelers, making it easier for them to visit the country.
“You will not have to make the same payments as others. You can travel to the motherland smoothly and conveniently,” he said.
Ghana to Apply Reciprocal Visa Fees
The Foreign Affairs Minister also announced that Ghana will introduce a reciprocal visa fee system.
Under this system, visa charges will be based on how much Ghanaians pay when applying for visas to other countries.
“If we pay more to enter a country, then their citizens will pay the same amount to enter Ghana,” Mr Ablakwa explained.
He said this approach will help Ghana raise revenue while promoting fairness in international travel arrangements.
Government Moves to Restore Ghana Airways
Mr Ablakwa also hinted at the return of Ghana Airways, the country’s former national airline.
He said President Mahama has directed that work be sped up, and a technical committee is close to completing its report.
According to the Minister, reviving Ghana Airways would ensure that money spent on air travel stays within the Ghanaian economy.
“If all those who flew into Ghana used Ghana Airways, that money would have supported our own economy,” he stated.
He added that a national airline would allow the government to offer discounted airfares for diaspora events and strengthen Ghana’s national pride.
24-Hour Economy Opens Doors for Diaspora Investment
The Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development, Mr Augustus Goosie Obuadum Tanoh, said the policy offers huge investment opportunities for Ghanaians living abroad.
He explained that the programme will connect agriculture, processing, logistics, and exports into strong value chains supported by reliable energy and modern infrastructure.
Mr Tanoh noted that many factories, warehouses, hospitals, ports, and markets are currently under-used due to poor coordination.
The 24-Hour Economy policy, he said, will ensure businesses operate efficiently at all times to meet the demands of global markets.
