These roads will be temporarily closed on Independence Day as authorities implement traffic restrictions in parts of Accra for Ghana’s 69th Independence Anniversary celebration.
The Ghana Police Service announced that several major roads around Jubilee House will be shut to traffic on Friday, March 6, 2026, to allow security arrangements and official ceremonies marking the national event.
The temporary closures are expected to affect motorists travelling through key routes in the capital during the duration of the celebration.
Roads Affected by the Closure
According to the police statement, the following roads will be temporarily closed on Independence Day:
- Liberation Road from the Opeibea Intersection towards the Central Business District
- Independence Avenue at the Ako Adjei By-pass
- Jawaharlal Nehru Road
Authorities explained that the restrictions are necessary to ensure security and smooth movement of official convoys during the national ceremony at Jubilee House.
Alternative Routes for Motorists
Motorists who usually travel through the affected roads have been advised to use alternative routes to avoid delays.
Drivers using Liberation Road are encouraged to divert through Kaokudi Road via the Kanda Highway to connect to Barnes Road toward the Central Business District.
Alternatively, motorists can use Giffard Road toward Osu.
Drivers approaching Independence Avenue will also be redirected through the Kanda Highway to Ring Road Central before continuing toward the 37 Intersection and other destinations.
Police Advice to the Public
The Ghana Police Service has urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead of time due to the expected traffic disruptions.
Traffic officers will be stationed at strategic locations to guide drivers and manage traffic flow.
Authorities also warned that vehicles will not be allowed to stop or park along the restricted roads, and towing services will be available to remove abandoned or improperly parked vehicles.
Security vehicles and vehicles carrying dignitaries will be allowed access only after completing required security checks.
Police are therefore urging the public to cooperate with officers on duty to ensure effective traffic management during the Independence Day celebration.
