Yaw Sarpong Confirmed Dead
Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician and founder of the Asomafoɔ Gospel Group, Yaw Sarpong, has passed away.
The news of his death was confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, in an interview with MyJoyOnline. As of the time of filing this report, the family has not officially disclosed the cause of death.
According to sources close to the family, Yaw Sarpong died on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Emena Hospital in Kumasi, where he had been receiving medical care.
Battled Ill Health for Years
Yaw Sarpong had been battling ill health for several years, which occasionally forced him to step back from public performances while he focused on treatment and recovery.
His death comes barely a month after the passing of Maame Tiwa, a key member and pillar of the Asomafoɔ Gospel Group. That loss deeply shook the gospel music fraternity and those close to the group.

A Giant of Ghanaian Gospel Music
Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of Ghanaian gospel music, Yaw Sarpong rose to national prominence as the leader of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafoɔ.
