U.S. Embassy Opens Thousands of Visa Appointment Slots Ahead of 2026 World Cup
Move aims to ease pressure on visa applications as Ghanaian football fans prepare to travel for the FIFA World Cup
U.S. Embassy Expands Visa Processing in Ghana
The United States Embassy in Accra has announced a major expansion in its visa processing capacity, opening thousands of additional non-immigrant visa appointment slots, many of which are already available.
The move is aimed at managing the expected surge in visa applications from Ghanaians planning to travel for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Early Application Encouraged for World Cup Fans
In a public statement shared on its official platforms, the Embassy confirmed that it continues to process non-immigrant visa applications and issued a direct message to football fans.
โPlanning to travel to the United States for the 2026 World Cup? If you do not have a valid U.S. visa, we encourage you to apply early,โ the statement said.
Officials say the early release of appointment slots is meant to reduce long waiting times and prevent last-minute rushes ahead of the tournament, which kicks off in June 2026.

Embassy Warns Against Visa Scams
The Embassy also reminded applicants to use only the official U.S. visa appointment website when booking interviews.
โReminder to apply via the official U.S. visa appointment website,โ the statement stressed, warning against fraudulent third-party agents who charge high fees and mislead applicants.
Applicants are advised that securing an appointment does not guarantee approval, as all visa decisions depend on a successful interview and meeting standard U.S. visa requirements.
High Travel Demand Expected From Ghana
The 2026 World Cup is expected to trigger record travel demand from West Africa, especially Ghana, where football enjoys massive support.
With the tournament expanding to 48 teams and strong interest in international travel for sporting events, the Embassyโs decision is seen as a necessary step to support tourism while maintaining security standards.
