A Nigerian undergraduate student has sparked widespread online debate after sharing her alleged experience with a lecturer who seized her phone during a lecture and demanded money before returning it.

In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), the lady, who identified herself as a 300-level student, said the incident happened while she was in class.

According to her, she briefly picked up her phone only to silence it immediately the lecturer entered the lecture hall.

Lecturer Allegedly Refused to Listen

The student explained that despite not actively using the phone, the lecturer allegedly assumed she was distracted and seized the device on the spot.

After the lecture, she waited behind to apologise and explain that she was only silencing her phone. However, she claimed the lecturer refused to listen and told her she would have to pay money before getting the phone back.

Student Claims She Knelt and Paid ₦10,000

The situation reportedly became more humiliating when the student said she knelt down in front of her classmates, who were final-year students, in a desperate attempt to retrieve her phone.

According to her, the lecturer demanded ₦10,000.

“I pleaded, I even had to kneel in front of all the final year students. He refused and said I was going to pay ₦10,000. I came back with ₦5,000 cash, he refused. I had to add another ₦5,000 before he gave me my phone,” she said.

Online Reactions and Calls for Investigation

The student questioned when it became acceptable for lecturers to confiscate students’ phones and demand money for their return.

Her video has since gone viral, with many Nigerians condemning the alleged action and calling on school authorities to investigate the matter.

Others raised broader concerns about abuse of power, student harassment, and the lack of clear disciplinary procedures in some tertiary institutions.
