Government Confirms Progress on Volivo Bridge Project
Ghana’s Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, has announced major progress toward the construction of the Volivo Bridge, describing recent discussions with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as highly productive.
Speaking after talks with Yushi Nagano, JICA’s Head of Africa Investment, Mr Agbodza expressed optimism that construction could begin this year.
“God willing, President Mahama will break ground this year for the construction of the bridge itself,” the minister stated.
Bridge to Surpass Adomi Bridge in Size and Design
The proposed Volivo Bridge will be a 540-metre cable-stayed bridge, making it 200 metres longer than the Adomi Bridge.
Key design features include:
- A 280-metre main span
- 51-metre-high bridge towers
- Two traffic lanes
- Pedestrian sidewalks
- Safety railings
Once completed, the bridge will hold records as Ghana’s longest cable-stayed span and tallest bridge towers, making it a major engineering landmark along the Eastern Corridor.
