Abu Trica Re-Arrested After High Court Strikes Case
Suspect faces renewed detention over U.S. extradition request
Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, has been re-arrested on Monday, January 26, 2026, shortly after the High Court struck out his certiorari application challenging proceedings at the Gbese District Court.
Abu Trica is facing romance fraud allegations, with the United States of America formally requesting his extradition through Ghanaian authorities.
Background of the Extradition Case
Extradition proceedings against Abu Trica and two other accused persons were initially ongoing at the Gbese District Court. However, the State later discontinued the case against the two co-accused.
Following that decision, lawyers for Abu Trica argued that since the charge before the court was conspiracy, the withdrawal of charges against the other accused persons automatically collapsed the case against their client.
The District Court agreed with this argument and discharged all three accused persons.

Why Abu Trica Returned to the High Court
Despite his discharge, Abu Trica later filed a certiorari application at the High Court, seeking to quash parts of the District Court proceedings.
The Attorney-Generalโs Department argued that the application was moot, since the prosecution had already been discontinued and the applicant discharged.
However, Abu Tricaโs lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, told the court that his client remained in detention despite the discharge, describing the situation as a disconnect between the law and its real-world application.
Attorney-General Responds
The Deputy Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, assured the court that if Abu Trica was still being held unlawfully, immediate steps would be taken to secure his release.
Based on this assurance, the High Court struck out the certiorari application, ruling that the matter had become unnecessary since the applicant had already been discharged.
Re-Arrest After Court Proceedings
Shortly after the High Court proceedings ended, state authorities re-arrested Abu Trica, reigniting legal and public debate surrounding the extradition process and his continued detention.
The reasons for the fresh arrest have not yet been officially detailed.
