Yoweri Museveni Wins Uganda Election, Extends 40-Year Rule

Opposition candidate Bobi Wine rejects results and alleges fraud.

Yoweri Museveni Declared Winner of Uganda Election

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has been declared the winner of Thursdayโ€™s presidential election, extending his rule by another five years.

The Electoral Commission announced that Museveni secured 72% of the votes, while his closest challenger, Bobi Wine, polled 25%. Voter turnout stood at 52.5%.

Bobi Wine Rejects Results

Bobi Wine, a 43-year-old opposition leader and former pop star, rejected the results, describing them as โ€œfakeโ€ and alleging ballot stuffing.

However, he did not provide specific evidence. The authorities have not officially responded to the claims, while African Union (AU) election observers said they saw no evidence of ballot stuffing.

Wine has called on his supporters to engage in non-violent protests.

Election Marred by Violence

The election period was marked by violence and heavy security presence. Bobi Wine claims that at least 21 people were killed during election-related incidents.

So far, the authorities have confirmed seven deaths.

Internet Shutdown Raises Concerns

Ugandaโ€™s internet has been shut down since Tuesday, making it difficult to independently verify information.

The government says the shutdown was necessary to prevent misinformation, fraud, and violence. However, the United Nations Human Rights Office described the move as โ€œdeeply worryingโ€.

Wine has demanded the immediate restoration of internet access.

African Union Calls for Restraint

Leading the AU observer mission, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, urged the Ugandan government to avoid suspending internet access during elections.

He also condemned reports of intimidation, arrests, and abductions, saying such actions erode public trust in the electoral process.

Claims of Arrest and Restricted Movement

Bobi Wineโ€™s party claimed he was abducted from his home in Kampala, a claim denied by police.

Wine later said he escaped a night raid and was in hiding. Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said Wineโ€™s movements were restricted due to security concerns in the area.

Yoweri Museveniโ€™s Long Rule

Museveni, now 81 years old, first came to power in 1986 as a rebel leader. He has now won seven elections.

He campaigned on the promise of stability, while Wine positioned himself as the voice of Ugandaโ€™s youth, promising reforms and a fight against corruption.
