Ofori-Atta Held by US Immigration Officials
Former Ghanaian Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has been detained by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over questions regarding his immigration status, his legal team has confirmed.
In a statement, his lawyers said Mr Ofori-Atta is fully cooperating with ICE while efforts are underway to resolve the matter.
Lawyers Explain Immigration Situation
According to the statement, Mr Ofori-Atta has a pending petition for adjustment of status, a legal process under US immigration law that allows individuals to remain in the country beyond the validity of their original visa.
His legal team described the process as routine and expressed confidence that the issue will be resolved quickly.

Health Challenges Behind Extended US Stay
The development comes amid serious health challenges that have kept Mr Ofori-Atta in the United States since January 2025.

He has been receiving treatment after being diagnosed with prostate cancer, a diagnosis confirmed in March 2025 following MRI scans and a biopsy.

Surgery at Mayo Clinic
Medical sources say Mr Ofori-Atta underwent a radical prostatectomy on Friday, June 13, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Doctors reportedly described the surgery as critical after tests showed signs of cancer progression.
Ongoing Medical Monitoring
In addition to cancer treatment, the former minister is also managing post-COVID Multi-System Inflammatory Response Syndrome, a condition diagnosed in February 2021, which has required continued medical supervision.
Sources close to the family say he remains under close medical monitoring.
