IShowSpeed Honoured with Ghanaian Name Barima Kofi Akuffo

Global internet personality IShowSpeed has been officially welcomed to Ghana through a traditional Akan naming ceremony, where he was given the local name Barima Kofi Akuffo.

The colourful ceremony took place in the Eastern Region of Ghana on Monday and was marked by royal traditions, cultural performances, and strong community participation.

Traditional Ceremony Draws Huge Crowd

The event, organised by local chiefs and elders, attracted a large gathering of residents who came out to witness the cultural moment.

The venue was filled with traditional drumming, dancing, and colourful kente cloth, creating a vibrant atmosphere that celebrated Ghana’s rich heritage.

IShowSpeed, dressed in handwoven traditional cloth, fully embraced the ceremony. He danced energetically to fontomfrom drums, greeted elders respectfully, and interacted warmly with members of the community.

Meaning Behind the Name “Barima Kofi Akuffo”

During the ceremony, Speed was formally introduced to the traditional ruler, after which he was presented with his Akan name, Barima Kofi Akuffo.

The name carries deep cultural meaning:

• Barima – A brave, noble and honourable man, often associated with strength and heroism
• Kofi – A male born on Friday, symbolising peace and fertility
• Akuffo – A respected Akan family name representing heritage and identity

Together, the name reflects strength, dignity, and belonging, symbolising Speed’s cultural connection to Ghana.

The ceremony ended with traditional blessings from the chiefs and elders, who expressed hope that Speed’s presence in Ghana would promote cultural exchange and showcase Ghanaian traditions to the world.

A visibly moved IShowSpeed thanked the chiefs, elders, and community members for the warm reception and promised to proudly carry his Ghanaian name wherever he goes.
