Champions League 2025/26: Who Qualifies, Who Faces Play-Offs as League Phase Nears End

The โ€˜Champions Leagueโ€™ league phase is entering a decisive stage, with just two matchdays remaining and several top clubs battling to secure automatic qualification for the knockout rounds.

According to predictions from the Opta Supercomputer, the final league table is beginning to take shape, with some major European teams expected to enter the knockout play-offs rather than qualify directly for the round of 16.

Current Leaders and Predicted Top Finishers

After six matchdays, Arsenal are the standout performers and remain the only team with a 100 percent record, sitting top of the table. They are followed closely by Bayern Munich, with defending champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in third place.

Opta predicts that Arsenal and Bayern Munich will retain the top two positions, while Manchester City are expected to finish above PSG. Atalanta and Liverpool are forecast to complete the top six.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are predicted to finish seventh and eighth with estimated point totals of 15.8 and 15.5, just enough for automatic qualification.

What Happens to Other English Clubs?

Opta predicts that Tottenham, Chelsea, and Newcastle will finish 11th, 13th, and 14th respectively. This would place them in the knockout play-off zone, meaning they must win a two-legged tie to reach the last 16.

However, all three English clubs are expected to finish in seeded positions, which means they cannot face each other in the play-offs.

How Champions League Qualification Works

  • Top 8 teams qualify automatically for the round of 16
  • Teams ranked 9th to 24th enter a two-legged knockout play-off
  • Teams finishing 25th to 36th are eliminated
  • There is no Europa League fallback for eliminated teams

Seeded teams (9thโ€“16th) face unseeded teams (17thโ€“24th).
