Gaming World Mourns Vince Zampella

Renowned video game developer Vince Zampella, best known as the co-creator of the Call of Duty franchise, has died at the age of 55.

His death was confirmed on Monday by Electronic Arts (EA), the US gaming company that owns Respawn Entertainment, the studio he co-founded. EA did not initially disclose the cause of death.

According to reports by NBC Los Angeles and the BBC, Zampella was involved in a fatal car crash in California on Sunday afternoon.

The reports stated that a Ferrari carrying two people veered off the road, hit a concrete barrier, and caught fire on a highway in Los Angeles. Zampella died at the scene, while the other passenger later died in hospital.

The California Highway Patrol said the cause of the crash is still under investigation, and authorities are yet to officially confirm who was driving.

Geoff Keighley Pays Tribute

Video game journalist and The Game Awards founder, Geoff Keighley, described Zampella as a โ€œtitan of the video game industry.โ€

โ€œVince was a gamer at heart and a visionary executive who knew how to recognize talent and give creators the freedom to build something truly great,โ€ Keighley wrote on X.

Keighley also shared an old interview he conducted with Zampella about Call of Duty, reflecting on his lasting impact on gaming.

EA Calls Him a Visionary Creator

In a statement, Electronic Arts said Zampellaโ€™s influence on the industry was deep and far-reaching.

โ€œA friend, colleague, leader and visionary creator, his work shaped modern interactive entertainment and inspired millions of players and developers worldwide,โ€ EA said.

Zampellaโ€™s Legacy in Gaming

Zampella co-created Infinity Ward, the studio behind Call of Duty, which debuted in 2003. The franchise has since grown into one of the most successful in gaming history, selling over 500 million copies worldwide. The latest release, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, launched in November 2025.
