The Akropong Electrocution Incident has left residents of Akropong-Akwapim and Old Tafo in shock after a 26-year-old man, Daniel Adjaye, reportedly died from electrocution while charging his mobile phone.

The incident is said to have occurred on Saturday, April 25, 2026, sparking renewed concerns over mobile phone safety in Ghana.

What happened

According to family sources, Daniel Adjaye was in his room using his iPhone while it was plugged into a power source.

His senior brother reportedly became concerned after repeated calls went unanswered and decided to check on him.

Upon entering the room, he found Daniel lying unresponsive with the phone placed on his chest. When he attempted to wake him, he allegedly felt an electric shock.

The brother quickly disconnected the device, but Daniel had already passed. Reports indicate that the area on his chest showed signs of severe burns, suggesting a possible fatal electric discharge.

Rising safety concerns

The Akropong Electrocution Incident has reignited discussions about unsafe phone usage habits, particularly the widespread practice of using devices while charging.

Experts have consistently warned that combining electricity with prolonged device use — especially with faulty accessories or unstable power supply — can increase the risk of:

  • Electric shock
  • Overheating
  • Fire outbreaks

Following the Akropong Electrocution Incident, safety advocates are urging the public to observe the following precautions:

  • Avoid using phones while charging
  • Do not sleep with charging devices close to your body
