The Ghana National Airline initiative has officially been launched, with the government opening discussions with international aviation operators to establish a new flag carrier based in Accra.

In a statement issued on April 28, 2026, the Ministry of Transport Ghana confirmed that a dedicated task force has been set up to oversee the process.

Strategic partner search begins

As part of the Ghana National Airline plan, the government has initiated a market sounding exercise to attract qualified global partners.

The engagement process will involve three rounds of consultations, leading to the selection of a strategic investor to form a joint venture with the state.

According to Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe, interested entities must be active airline operators, subsidiaries, or authorised representatives of established carriers.

Requirements for partners

The ministry outlined strict eligibility criteria for potential partners, including:

  • Proven expertise in airline operations and management
  • Strong marketing and route development capabilities
  • Compliance with international aviation regulations
  • Demonstrated financial strength

The preferred partner is expected to hold a majority equity stake in the airline.

Operational model and routes

The proposed Ghana National Airline will operate as a full-service carrier, targeting long-haul routes across:

  • Europe
  • North America
  • Middle East
  • Asia

In addition, a hybrid or low-cost model will be used for regional African routes to improve connectivity and affordability.

Cargo and expansion plans

Government plans also include the creation of an integrated cargo unit to boost trade, logistics, and exports.

Fleet acquisition and deployment will be phased, with initial operations expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

Submission details

Interested companies must submit proposals titled:
“Request for Inclusion in the Investor Engagement Rounds: Establishment of a National Airline for Ghana.”

Submissions should include:

  • Company profile
  • Relevant experience
  • Proposed partnership structure
  • Preliminary business plan

The deadline for submissions is May 29, 2026, at the Ministry of Transport in Accra.

National vision

The Ghana National Airline project is seen as a major step toward restoring Ghana’s presence in global aviation and strengthening its position as a regional air transport hub.
