BECE 2026: Candidates to Choose Two Category A Schools

img 5743

BECE Candidates to select two Category A schools is the latest directive from the Ghana Education Service as part of reforms to improve the school placement process.

The new rule requires candidates to choose two Category A Senior High Schools—one boarding and one day—within their locality to address persistent placement challenges.

Expansion of school choices

Under the updated system, students will now select a total of eight schools, an increase from the previous seven options.

According to Director-General Ernest Kofi Davis, the additional selection is intended to ease pressure on top-performing schools and increase placement opportunities.

Early placement process

The reforms also introduce an earlier start to the placement process. Authorities will begin placements immediately after the BECE ends, rather than waiting for results.

This timeline adjustment is expected to allow enough time for processing before schools reopen.

Increased flexibility for candidates

Beyond Category A schools, candidates will have more flexibility when selecting Category B and Category C schools.

This is aimed at helping students make more realistic choices and reducing mismatches during placement.

Addressing previous challenges

The reforms are designed to tackle long-standing issues such as:

  • Overcrowding in top-tier schools
  • Delays in placement
  • Inefficient matching of candidates to schools

Officials believe the new system will improve fairness, efficiency, and accessibility in the placement process.
