Ali Hosseini Khamenei killed in Israeli strike, Iran confirms
Iranian state media on Saturday reported that Ali Hosseini Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader for more than three decades, was killed in an Israeli strike as part of what was described as a large-scale joint military operation involving Israel and the United States.
The Iranian government announced 40 days of public mourning, referring to Khamenei’s death as a “martyrdom.” The 86-year-old cleric had ruled Iran since 1989, making him one of the world’s longest-serving political leaders.
Official Reactions
Former U.S. President Donald Trump responded on Truth Social, describing Khamenei as “one of the most evil people in history” and calling the killing “justice” for Americans and others killed by Iran-linked actions over the years.
Trump claimed U.S. intelligence played a role in locating Khamenei and warned that military strikes would “continue uninterrupted” until what he described as peace is achieved across the Middle East.
Iranian officials have not commented on Trump’s statements beyond confirming the death and announcing the mourning period.
Why It Matters
The killing of Khamenei represents a historic shock to Iran’s political system and could significantly alter the balance of power in the region. U.S. and Israeli officials have previously stated that weakening Iran’s leadership structure is a strategic objective.
Khamenei held ultimate authority over Iran’s judiciary, military, state media, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and was central to suppressing dissent and shaping Iran’s regional influence.
Succession Crisis Emerges
Under Iran’s constitution:
- An interim leadership council assumes power
- The Assembly of Experts selects a new Supreme Leader
However, Israeli officials claim recent strikes eliminated large portions of Iran’s military and intelligence leadership, raising uncertainty over how smoothly succession can proceed.
Reported Senior Officials Killed
Iranian and regional sources report the deaths of:
- Ali Shamkhani (Top security adviser)
- Mohammad Pakpour (IRGC commander)
- Aziz Nasirzadeh (Defense Minister)
- Mohammad Shirazi (Chief military secretary)
- Saleh Asadi (Military intelligence head)
- Hossein Jabal Amelian (SPND chairman)
- Reza Mozaffari-Nia (Former SPND chairman)
These claims have not been independently verified.
What to Watch
Ali Larijani, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council secretary, survived the strikes and has vowed retaliation against Israel and the United States.
Meanwhile, Benjamin Netanyahu has suggested the events could open the door to internal change within Iran.
