Catherine O’Hara, the celebrated actress whose unmistakable comedic style helped define generations of film and television, has died at the age of 71.

In a statement released on Friday, her agency, Creative Artists Agency (CAA), confirmed that O’Hara died at her home in Los Angeles following a brief illness.

A Career That Shaped Pop Culture

Born in Canada, O’Hara began her career with the legendary Second City comedy troupe before transitioning into film and television, where she became known for playing some of the most memorable maternal characters in cinema history.

She rose to global fame as Delia Deetz in Beetlejuice (1988), delivering a performance that blended eccentric humour with theatrical flair. She later reprised the role in the 2024 sequel.

In Home Alone (1990), O’Hara portrayed Kate McCallister, the frantic mother who famously screamed “Kevin!” after realizing she had left her son behind. The role cemented her place in pop culture and was reprised in the 1992 sequel.

Tributes From Co-Stars and Collaborators

Macaulay Culkin, her on-screen son in Home Alone, paid a heartfelt tribute on social media.

“I thought we had time. I wanted more,” he wrote. “I love you.”

Director Chris Columbus described O’Hara as essential to the film’s emotional success.

“What most people don’t realize is that Catherine carries 50% of that movie. It simply would not work without her,” he said.

Christopher Guest, who worked closely with O’Hara on several mockumentaries, called her “one of the comic giants of our age.”

Schitt’s Creek and Late-Career Triumph

O’Hara enjoyed a career renaissance as Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek, starring alongside longtime collaborator Eugene Levy. Her performance earned widespread acclaim and numerous awards, including an Emmy in 2020 and a Golden Globe in 2021.

Accepting her Emmy, O’Hara thanked the show’s creators for allowing her to “fully be her ridiculous self.”

Final Roles and Lasting Legacy

In recent years, O’Hara appeared in The Studio and Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us, earning further Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Actor Pedro Pascal described her as a “genius” and said her passing had left “less light in my world.”

Across a career spanning five decades, O’Hara became known not only for her humour, but for the emotional depth she brought to comedy.

Family and Memorial

Catherine O’Hara is survived by her husband, production designer Bo Welch, and their two sons, Matthew and Luke.

According to her agency, a private celebration of life will be held by the family.
