The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially approved the issuance of a Ghanaian passport to American streaming sensation Darren Jason Watkins Jr., popularly known as IShowSpeed.

The approval follows the streamer’s widely followed “Speed Does Africa” tour, which culminated in a highly publicised visit to Ghana on Monday, January 26, 2026.

Foreign Affairs Minister Confirms Decision

The decision was confirmed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who praised IShowSpeed for his genuine engagement with Ghana and his role in amplifying African culture on a global scale.

In a post on his official Facebook page, the Minister disclosed that the approval followed discussions with Ghanaian content creator Wode Maya, as well as verification of Speed’s personal and cultural ties to the country.

“Following our discussions and subsequent confirmation of the irrefutable ties of IShowSpeed to Ghana, I am pleased to inform you and our compatriots that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian Passport to IShowSpeed,” the Minister stated.

Recognition of Cultural Ambassadorship

Mr. Ablakwa further expressed appreciation to both IShowSpeed and Wode Maya, describing them as worthy ambassadors of Ghanaian and African culture.

Wode Maya, who was granted a diplomatic passport in 2025, was also commended for his continued efforts in projecting Ghana positively on the international stage.

“Keep making our great nation Ghana, and our beloved African continent proud,” the Minister added.

A Visit That Captured Global Attention

The passport approval crowns a visit that drew global attention. During his stay, IShowSpeed was traditionally welcomed in Akropong, where he underwent a spiritual Akan naming ceremony and received the name Barima Kofi Akuffo.

His itinerary spanned several iconic locations, including Asenema Waterfalls, Independence Square, and cultural hubs across Accra.

Cultural Immersion and Public Engagement

Beyond ceremonial events, Speed immersed himself in Ghanaian culture—sampling local cuisine, including Ghanaian Jollof, and interacting with notable personalities such as Dancegodlloyd and Bukom Banku.

The visit has been widely described as a landmark moment in Ghana’s evolving cultural diplomacy, highlighting the growing influence of digital creators in shaping international perceptions.
