Former First Lady Dies at Ridge Hospital
Former First Lady of Ghana, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, has reportedly passed away at the Ridge Hospital in Accra at the age of 76.
According to sources close to the family, she died in the early hours of Thursday, October 23, 2025, after a period of illness.
Born on November 17, 1948, in Cape Coast, Nana Konadu was the wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings and one of Ghana’s most influential political figures.
Life and Political Journey
She served as First Lady from 1981 to 2001, making her Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady.
Nana Konadu played a key role in national development through the 31st December Women’s Movement (DWM), founded in 1982, to promote women’s entrepreneurship, education, and political involvement.
In 2012, she founded the National Democratic Party (NDP) after leaving the National Democratic Congress (NDC). She made history in 2016 as Ghana’s first female presidential candidate.
Legacy of a Trailblazer
Nana Konadu was a strong voice for women’s rights and empowerment. Her book, It Takes a Woman (2018), detailed her life’s journey and contribution to Ghana’s political and social progress.
Her last public appearance was on September 18, 2025, when she attended the funeral of Asantehemaa Nana Konadu Yiadom III at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
As of now, the Rawlings family and government officials have yet to release an official statement.
