Mobile Money Transactions Hit GH¢518bn in December 2025 – BoG
December records the highest monthly mobile money transaction value in 2025

Mobile money (MoMo) transactions in Ghana surged to a record GH¢518.4 billion in December 2025, highlighting the growing dominance of digital payments in the country’s financial ecosystem, according to the Bank of Ghana’s Summary of Economic and Financial Data.
The December figure represents the highest monthly transaction value recorded in 2025, driven largely by festive-season consumer spending and the continued expansion of mobile money services nationwide.
Transaction Volumes and Usage Rise
Transaction volumes increased significantly during the month, reaching 982 million transactions, up from 892 million in November. The growth reflects both increased consumer activity and broader adoption of digital payment platforms.
Active and Registered Accounts Increase
Data from the central bank showed a sharp rise in active mobile money accounts, which climbed to 26.7 million in December, compared with 25.5 million in November.
Meanwhile, the number of registered mobile money accounts grew to 80.5 million, reinforcing ongoing financial inclusion gains across the country.

Agent Network Expands Nationwide
The mobile money ecosystem also benefited from an expanding agent network. By the end of December 2025, 491,000 active agents were recorded nationwide, improving access to digital financial services, especially in underserved areas.
Wallet Balances Reach New Peak
Balances held in mobile money wallets rose to GH¢39.6 billion, the highest level recorded in 2025. This suggests increased liquidity within the digital payments ecosystem and growing confidence among users in mobile wallets as a store of value.
Interoperable Transactions Strengthen
Interoperable mobile money transactions also saw notable growth. Transaction values rose to GH¢5.8 billion in December, up from GH¢4.9 billion in November, supported by higher cross-network transfers during the festive period.
Traditional Payment Channels Lag Behind
Despite overall growth in electronic payments, traditional payment instruments continued to play a smaller role. Cheque transactions totaled GH¢37.3 billion in December, far below mobile money values.
Other electronic channels such as GhIPSS Instant Pay (GIP) recorded GH¢73.3 billion in transaction value during the month.
Outlook for 2026
The latest data reinforces mobile money’s position as the backbone of Ghana’s retail payments system. With rising smartphone penetration, continued agent network expansion, and increasing consumer reliance on digital payments, growth in mobile money usage is expected to remain strong into 2026.
