Former Arsenal Striker Billy Vigar Dies at 21 After On-Field Injury

Billy Vigar’s Tragic Passing

Former Arsenal academy striker Billy Vigar has died at the age of 21 after sustaining a serious brain injury while playing for Chichester City.

Vigar collapsed during last Saturday’s Isthmian League Premier Division match against Wingate & Finchley, which was abandoned after 13 minutes. He was placed in an induced coma and later underwent surgery, but sadly passed away on Thursday, September 25.


Family Statement

In a heartfelt message, his family said:

“After sustaining a significant brain injury on Saturday, Billy was put into an induced coma. On Tuesday, he needed an operation to help his recovery. Although this helped, the injury was too severe, and he passed away on Thursday morning. The responses show how much Billy was loved within the sport. His family are devastated that this happened while he was playing the game he loved.”

Chichester City confirmed the sad news, asking for privacy for the family during this painful time.

Arsenal also shared their condolences:

“Everyone at Arsenal Football Club is deeply sorry to hear of the tragic passing of Chichester City forward and former Arsenal academy player, Billy Vigar. He will be remembered for his talent, love of the game, and the pride he had in representing Arsenal.”

Billy Vigar’s Football Journey

  • Joined Arsenal academy in 2017 at age 14 after being scouted from Hove Rivervale FC.
  • Signed a professional contract with Arsenal in 2022.
  • Went on loan spells to Derby County and Eastbourne Borough.
  • Moved to Hastings United in 2024.
  • Joined Chichester City at the start of the current season.

Arsenal recalled how Vigar scored 17 goals in his debut season at Hale End and called being scouted “the most important day of his life.”
